The installation responds to the meanings and forces that drive love. Specifically, it explores the love for family. In my personal experience I have come to believe that “love” is what you will do for someone rather than a feeling. I show this through the act of casting my house. I expose the plaster cast house to the elements, and give myself the task of protecting it. Through the course of about three weeks I committed myself to this Idea of love regardless of the various conditions of working exposed to the elements. Reflection is a key component in my process, the various journal entries are evidence of this. They are also there for the viewer to be placed in the boots of the artist. Immerse yourself in a dialogue with the work, and try to feel love in the way that I did.
The installation was a collection of first person video that I shot, written and a recorded journal entries, photographs, and a plaster abstraction of my house.
The plaster house is an abstraction of my house. I wanted to create more of an essence of my home rather than a direct representation. The home is made of plaster because of its relationship with memories. When plaster is exposed to the "elements" it deteriorates, much like the relationship between memories and time.
The journal entries describe my day to day documentation of creating the sculpture. Each entry was accompanied with corresponding images of my hands at the time of writing them. This is to show the variety of obstacles I faced regarding the "elements". Some days it was sunny, and some nights were pouring rain with 35 degree weather.
These photos are documentation of my process in creating the sculpture.
