ARTIST STATEMENT
On the Archival Memory Series
The Archival Memory Series is an investigation into archived photography, dating back to the 1940's, that lack a context or documented history of any kind. The paintings are an attempt to uncover the nuanced situations, hidden locations, and forgotten people who have forever been immortalized in a photograph never meant to have an impact on someone many years in the future.
Assumptions of relationships and narrative speak to a contrast within reality and perception. Much like any retold histories, these paintings balance on the fringe of fact and fiction, memory and illusion, and what is shown and hidden to the outside onlooker.
